The FIFA World Cup 26™ Oceania Qualifiers heat up this afternoon at Go Media Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, as Tahiti and Vanuatu meet in a winner-takes-all match to secure the final semi-final spot from Group B.

The scenario is straightforward: Sam Garcia’s Tahiti side needs only a draw to advance, while Juliano Schmeling’s Vanuatu must win to progress. New Zealand, with a commanding +10 goal difference, has already effectively sealed the top spot in Group B and will face Samoa in their final group game tonight, leaving the spotlight firmly on this pivotal showdown.

The encounter marks the first time these two teams have faced each other since 2019 when Vanuatu won 2-0 in a friendly in Port Vila, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the contest.

Despite an 8-1 loss to New Zealand on Friday night in Hamilton, Vanuatu’s head coach, Juliano Schmeling, remains optimistic and focused on the task ahead.

“We don’t have time to dwell on the New Zealand result,” Schmeling stated. “The players understand that this is a grand final for us. We need to attack, score, and be prepared for Tahiti’s counterattacks. I believe in this group—they’re strong, and they’re ready.

“Our players naturally love to attack, and that will be key. But we also need to stay sharp defensively because Tahiti has the quality to exploit opportunities,” Schmeling said.

For Tahiti, head coach Sam Garcia is confident yet cautious of the challenge posed by Vanuatu.

“We respect Vanuatu—they’re a great team with experienced players and a lot of speed,” Garcia commented. “We need a draw or a win, but our approach is to play for victory. This will be a tough, complicated match, but we’re ready for it.”

Tahiti comes into the match off a solid performance, holding New Zealand to a 3-0 loss in Port Vila last month and they comfortably accounted for Samoa 3-0 in difficult conditions on Friday in Hamilton.

The winner will face Group A winners New Caledonia in the semi-finals on March 21 in Wellington with New Zealand meeting Group A runners up Fiji in the other semi-final.
