Future Kurukurus in the making showcased the on-court talent of the Solomon when they won the 2017 FFA National Futsal Championship U-12 competition for a second year in a row with a 5-2 win against NSW Lightnings in the final on Sunday.
The Lightnings started strong and held Solomon Islands to a 2-2 draw until the half-time whistle, but the Melanesians proved their fitness in the second half and scored three more unanswered goals to claim the title.
The young Solomon Islands side displayed dominance throughout all their matches, defeating Victoria 7-2 in the quarter-final and Queensland Metros 4-0 in the semi-final, finishing the tournament undefeated.
The U-14 national team were also a standout amongst the Australians, defeating Victoria 3-0 in the quarter-final and South Australia 4-0 in the semi-final on Saturday. The side finished second in the competition after an 8-3 loss to NSW Thunder in Sunday’s final.
The international success of both youth teams indicates the depth of talented players thriving in Oceania’s top futsal nation.
