The next generation of Papua New Guinea football talent is emerging, with three sons of former Kapuls stars making their mark at the OFC U-15 Boys Development Tournament in Auckland this past week.

Andrew Lepani, Riccardo Daniel, and Nigel Gunemba were standout performers in coach Steven Mune’s side at the event, which was supported by UEFA’s Together programme. Their participation adds a compelling family legacy narrative to a tournament focused on growth, experience, and enjoyment over results.

All three youngsters have deep footballing roots. Andrew’s father, Tagaia Watson Lepani, was a stalwart defender for the national team. Riccardo’s dad, Richard Daniel, captained the Kapuls from midfield, while Nigel’s father, Raymond Gunemba, is a celebrated former captain and prolific striker.

“Football means everything to me – to play and have fun – and I’ve had a great experience at this tournament,” said Riccardo Daniel.

His teammate Andrew Lepani echoed the sentiment: “My dad always tells me to just play and have fun.”

Meanwhile, Nigel Gunemba carried on the family tradition by finding the back of the net during the week.

“It feels like I beat the big boys. I scored a goal and I feel excited,” Gunemba said. “I want to continue to the next stage and play football for life.”

The trio’s next target is selection for Papua New Guinea’s U-16 squad ahead of the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship next year. With three Oceania teams now earning qualification spots at the FIFA U-17 Men’s World Cup, the path is clearer than ever for young Pacific talent to reach the global stage.
