OFC U-20 Championship 1986

The sixth edition of the OFC U-20 Championship took place in 1986 and doubled as qualification for the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship ™ in Chile. The tournament was hosted in Auckland with all matches played at Mt Smart Stadium. It was contested between five nations in a round-robin format.

Australia was too strong for the rest of the group, recording comfortable victories against Fiji, Taiwan and New Zealand, while Israel held them to a 1-1 draw. Having gone through the tournament unbeaten Australia claimed a third consecutive and fourth OFC U-20 Championship title overall.

The FIFA World Youth Championship in 1987 weren’t happy hunting grounds for Australia, who started the tournament well with a 2-0 victory over Togo. However, their tournament ended with consecutive defeats to eventual champions Yugoslavia and hosts Chile.
