OFC U-20 Championship 1985

The fifth edition of the OFC U-20 Championship took place in 1985 and doubled as qualification for the 1985 FIFA World Youth Championship™ in the Soviet Union. The tournament was hosted in Sydney, Australia and was contested between six nations in a round-robin format.

The title went to Australia for a second consecutive time as they recorded five wins from five, including a crucial 2-1 victory over New Zealand and an all important 3-2 win over Israel on the final match day.

At the 1985 FIFA World Youth Championship Australia were drawn into a group with hosts Soviet Union, Nigeria and Canada. In their matches Australia recorded goalless draws, meaning they needed a win against Nigeria to reach the knockout stages. Leading 2-0 at half-time, Australia capitulated late in the second-half, conceding three goals in 16 minutes to lose 3-2 and miss out on the quarterfinals.
