OFC U-17 Championship 1991

The fourth edition of the OFC U-17 Championship took place in 1991 and doubled as qualifying for the 1991 FIFA U-17 WorldChampionship™ in Italy. The tournament was held in Napier, New Zealand, and was contested by just three nations who all played each other twice.

Australia made it four wins from four, sealing the trophy with a 1-0 win over hosts New Zealand on the final day, securing a fourth consecutive OFC U-17 Championship title.

For the third time Australia progressed to the knockout stages of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, they opened their account with a 4-3 victory against Mexico courtesy of a hat-trick from Paul Agostino. They followed this up with a tight 1-0 victory over Congo, before falling to Qatar in the last group match, however they still qualified top of their group.

In the quarter-finals, Argentina shot out to a 1-0 lead in the first-half, then doubled it early in the second-half. An own goal from the South Americans gave Australia a way back into the match in the 75th minute but they couldn’t find an equaliser as they loss 2-1, falling just shy of the semi-finals.
