OFC Futsal Championship 1999
The third edition of the OFC Futsal Championship took place in 1999 with the winner also qualifying for the 2000 FIFA Futsal World Championship™ in Guatemala. The tournament was again held in Port Vila, Vanuatu, and was contested between seven nations in a round-robin format. Hosts Vanuatu were joined by two-time defending champions Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, and the Cook Islands.
The decisive match of the tournament ended up being the very first, with Australia edging Fiji 3-1 to take an early advantage in the title race. Australia went on to record victories in all of their remaining five matches, with the second closest winning margin being a nervy 3-0 win over hosts Vanuatu on the final day. A win that secured Australia their third consecutive OFC Futsal Championship title and qualification for the 2000 FIFA Futsal World Championship™. Fiji recovered from their opening defeat to go unbeaten through their remaining five fixtures, finishing five points behind Australia as runners-up. Hosts Vanuatu finished a further two points behind in third.
Australia attended their third Futsal World Cup hoping to record just their second ever win at the tournament. The OFC representative was joined in Group C by Russia, Croatia and Costa Rica. Their opening fixture was a close as Australia came against any team at the World Cup, going down 6-2 to Costa Rica, before following that up with a 6-0 defeat to Croatia and a hefty 10-1 loss to Russia.
