OFC Futsal Championship 1992

The inaugural OFC Futsal Championship, now known as the OFC Futsal Nations Cup, was held in 1992 and was the first futsal tournament to be established by OFC. The tournament was hosted in Brisbane, Australia, with the winner qualifying as the OFC representative for the 1992 FIFA Futsal World Championship™ in Hong Kong. It was contested between three nations; hosts Australia, New Zealand, and Vanuatu, with each team playing each other twice in a round-robin format.

Hosts Australia opened up the tournament with a bang, defeating Vanuatu 8-1 in the first ever OFC Futsal Championship fixture. They backed that up with a 9-2 victory over New Zealand on match day two, before beating both nations again in the reverse fixtures to collect maximum points with four wins from four. A 3-0 victory over New Zealand in their final match was Australia’s smallest winning margin, as they secured the inaugural OFC Futsal Championship title and qualified for the 1992 FIFA Futsal World Championship™ in Hong Kong. Vanuatu finished in second with two victories over New Zealand.

As continental champions, Australia became the first OFC member to participate at a FIFA Futsal World Championship™ in Hong Kong in 1992. They didn’t progress past the group stage, but recorded the first win by any OFC side at the tournament with an 8-6 victory over Costa Rica. Brazil would top Group C and go on to claim their second consecutive World Cup crown.
