Fa’arodo has been on form for the Solomon Islands in FIFA World Cup qualifying, scoring in his country’s 2-0 victory over Tahiti and the 6-1 defeat to New Zealand in September, and Team Wellington coach Matt Calcott is hoping to see the veteran midfielder display some of that attacking edge this weekend.
Having been left out of the squad which was defeated 3-0 by champions Waitakere United last week, Fa’arodo – who made nearly a dozen appearances in the first season of the A-League for Perth Glory – should be well-rested and looking sharp come Sunday.
Calcott’s young side will be focused on beginning the game more strongly at Westpace, nicknamed the Cake Tin, after conceding less than half-a-minute in to their defeat against Waitakere.
“If we get off to a better start this week, then that’s going to help people grow into their roles,” Calcott says.
“It sounds cliché but we’ve got to be switched on from the start and get in the right frame of mind and dealing with whatever comes along early on.”
The Wellington-Canterbury match is the first of three ASB Premiership games set to be played as curtain-raisers to Wellington Phoenix A-League fixtures.
Kick-off on Sunday is at 1.45pm, while the Phoenix will take on Central Coast Mariners shortly afterwards from 4.30pm.
