Smith’s club beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 on Thursday to secure victory in the German Bundesliga with a game to spare. The club’s maiden title in the 12-team league was built around their defence, having conceded just 15 goals in 21 games.
Smith, who has played 58 internationals, has struggled with injury this season but tweeted her delight at Wolfsburg being crowned “Deutsche Meisters” in her fourth season at the club.
Wolfsburg could earn the title of Europe’s premier women’s club when they face French defending champions Olympique Lyonnais in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final at Stamford Bridge in London on May 23.
Olympique Lyonnais crushed Ali Riley’s Swedish club Lbd Malmo 8-0 on aggregate in the quarter finals of the competition last month, before overcoming fellow French side Juivsy in the semi finals. Wolfsburg defeated Arsenal 4-1 on aggregate in the other semi final.
Elsewhere in Frauen Bundesliga action, Football Ferns all-time leading goalscorer Amber Hearn continued her hot streak netting two goals in USV Jena’s 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich. After a slow start to the season Hearn has scored six goals in her last seven matches. Her international teammate Ria Percival was also on the scoresheet last weekend in a 2-1 win over Sindelfingen. USV Jena is ninth in the 12-team league and both of their Football Ferns have played in all 20 league matches to date.
Bad Neuenahr’s kiwi pair of Sarah Gregorius and former Football Fern Emma Kete continue to play a role for their club side. The forwards were introduced as subs for the last 12 minutes of the match with SGS Essen. Bad Neuenahr won 2-1 and sit in fifth place.
A division down and Rebekah Stott was an unlikely hero for SC Sand scoring the only goal in a 1-0 away win at second-placed Koln to maintain their push for a place in the Frauen Bundesliga. Sand – who also have Betsy Hassett on their books – are currently third in the Southern Conference of the German second division, four points off the automatic promotion place with three games to play.
In the Northern Conference, Anna Green and Lokomotive Leipzig are stuck in mid-table.
Back in Sweden, Riley has played every minute in Malmo’s opening three matches in the Damallsvenskan. Malmo – last season’s runners up – are unbeaten but sit in third place on goal difference and trail league leaders Tyreso by two points. Similarly, Kirsty Yallop has played all 270 minutes for her side Vittsjo, although they have a single win from their first three outings.
