Reid was given the honour for the first time in a Barclays Premier League fixture after both regular captain Kevin Nolan and vice-captain Mark Noble were ruled out of the match with injuries.
It is just the second occasion Reid has led West Ham after being handed the honour for the first time in the FA Cup third round replay against Manchester United at Old Trafford in January.
The defender relished the role, in which the team secured a vital 1-0 away win, saying he was proud to have been handed the captaincy by manager Sam Allardyce.
“It’s a great privilege. We have Kevin as a great captain and Mark right after him, so if I can just do a job when they are not available then it is fine by me,” Reid said.
“Otherwise, I just go about my business as usual and don’t try to really change myself. As a captain I just try to give 100 per cent and try to help out my teammates. I try to be a good role model and do my best and encourage everyone to try their hardest and be a winner.”
Reid is expected back in New Zealand later this month to link up with his All Whites teammates for two tough encounters against New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands, on 22 and 26 March respectively, in the third stage of Oceania qualifying for the FIFA World Cup.
