Mermer has worked with these players for a number of years, with many of them graduates of the Vanuatu Football Federation’s Teouma Academy programme.
From the OFC U-17 Championship held in Santo, Vanuatu last year, some of the standout players making their return are Jaison Thomas, Remy Kalsrap, Jacky Ruben and Ruben Frank.
Bong Kalo, a key member of last year’s U-17 squad, recently took part in the OFC Champions League group stage with Tafea and will once again be relied on to showcase his skills.
With the players spread out around the country Mermer hasn’t had as much time with the complete squad as he would have liked, but is confident they have come together well.
The side came together ten days ago for a full camp and have played three friendly matches during that time. The Vanuatu U-20 secured a 3-2 victory over OFC Champions League 2014 finalists Amicale and downed Shepherds United 4-2. Their final game was a rematch against Amicale which they drew 1-1 at Port Vila Stadium.
The young side had lined up a final friendly against TVL Premier League side Erakor Golden Star to take place over the weekend at Korman Stadium before they head off to Suva, Fiji on Tuesday, 20 May.
Vanuatu’s first match will be against New Caledonia on Friday, 23 May at ANZ Stadium in Suva, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm (local).
