Last month we completed two very successful Olympic Qualifying Tournament’s for the Men and Women of OFC. New Zealand saw off hosts Fiji and a high scoring Solomon Island squad to take out top spot in the Men’s tournament while hosts Papua New Guinea were also overcome by the Kiwis in the women’s one-off decider in Port Moresby.
Both the Men’s and Women’s teams from New Zealand will travel to Beijing in August to compete at the Olympic games.
Television coverage added to the success of the tournaments with Fiji TV providing delayed coverage of the Men’s Tournament while EMTV showed live coverage of the Women’s match (more details below).
After some exciting group stage action Waitakere United and Kossa FC will meet up in the two legged OFC O-League final. The first leg is in Honiara on April 26 with the return leg being played at Trusts Stadium, Auckland on May11.
In May members of the World Cup Winning France 98’ side will play in a Jubilee match in Papeete and Noumea in honour of OFC Ambassador Christian Karembeu and Tahitian-born French international Pascal Vahirua. Proceeds of the match in Papeete will go toward three distinct charities each dealing with cancer, victims of crime, and the prevention of domestic violence.
The Jubilee will be run in conjunction with the OFC congress where FIFA President Sepp Blatter will be in attendance.
An international U-12 festival of football will also be held in New Caledonia from 28-31 of May.
