What prompted you to join Manchester City?
Living in one of England’s biggest footballing cities and playing for such a professional club is surely the best environment I can be in right now to prepare for the next women’s World Cup and Olympics. I also liked the idea of being part of a new team going into the FA Women’s Super League for the first time.
What are the most exciting aspects of being involved in a new competition starting soon?
It’s always exciting starting in a new league and the best bit is getting to know new people and making new friends while training hard during pre-season. I hope I can bring something different to the team that will help us win games and also learn from the different style of play over here.
How have you adjusted to life in Manchester?
Life in Manchester so far has been pretty full on with pre-season training mixed with international fixtures in China and Cyprus. Although, thankfully, I’ve managed to squeeze in a couple of concerts already and have just moved into a new flat with Jill Scott [England international] where I am slowly starting to settle in.
What is the professional environment like at Manchester City?
The club’s professionalism has blown me away. Our kit is all laid out for us ready to go and washed for us after and we can go in for breakfast and lunch before and after training. There’s only one full day off a week, if we are lucky, and we have been able to go and watch three or four of the men’s games at the Etihad Stadium while the new 16-pitch Manchester City complex will be completed for us to move into in June. All these little things are what make it an ideal environment to be in to become a better player.
With more than 50 caps for the Football Ferns now, what areas of your game do you think have developed the most since playing your first game for New Zealand?
Since my first game against Argentina in 2008 for the Ferns I have definitely become a more confident player on the ball. I strongly believe the more you play at this top level, the more confident you become on the ball and the more you are able to fully express yourself on the field. The next level for me is to get as many touches on the ball as possible everyday to improve my technique and Manchester City is the perfect place I could be to be able to achieve this.
