Match 9: Fiji 0-3 Vanuatu (half-time 0-1)
Vanuatu has scored an emphatic 3-0 win over Fiji in today’s first match of the final round. The win elevates the Carlos Buzzetti coached side to the top of Group 2 and in the process securing the qualifying berth to the Stage 2 preliminary competition in Adelaide, Australia on 29 May – 6 June 2004.
Both sides showed no quarter in the opening half until Lorry Thompsen’s goal just before half-time provided the breakthrough. In the second half, the Vanuatu team grew in confidence shutting down Fiji without their star striker and the tournament’s leading goal-scorer, Veresa Toma, who was rested. A brace of goals to defender Wilkins Simon Lauru extended Vanuatu’s lead after the break.
Vanuatu and Fiji now qualify for Stage 2 as Group 2 winner and runner up respectively.
All teams for Stage 2 have now been confirmed as: Group 1 winner – Solomon Islands, Group 1 runner up – Tahiti, Group 2 winner – Vanuatu, Group 2 runner up – Fiji and seeded teams Australia, New Zealand.
