The Golden Boot winner at the recent OFC U-20 Championship in Lautoka, Fiji earlier this year, Matarerega was chosen to participate in the three month attachment programme.
While delighted at the opportunity to see a young, talented Fijian footballer develop his skills further afield, Fiji Football Association CEO Bob Kumar says the association respects the Nadi striker’s decision not to accept the offer.
“Rusiate has declined the offer to join the New South Wales team for the three month attachment programme and will instead remain in Fiji to play for Nadi,” Kumar says.
“Fiji Football Association had offered to pay for his expenses as by doing this we will be nurturing talented players and promoting a better standard of football in the country.
“The reason we got from Matarerega is that he wants to continue his studies and attending the programme in Australia would make that hard for him.”
Matarerega, the son of former Lautoka and Nadi representative Watisono Voli, started playing with Central College before being drafted into the Nadi side where he has continued to thrive – proving a vital cog in the team’s success.
