After years of service on the field the 42-year-old and1998 World Champion with France has joined Greek club Olympiacos FC as the strategic advisor to the club’s administration.
The Lifou-born former professional wore the Olympiacos jersey from 2001-2004 taking the Greek Super League title with the club in 2002 and 2003. Since retiring from his professional career in 2006, Karembeu has continued to have an active role in football as a scout for several different professional clubs as well as representing the Oceania region and FIFA through his ambassador roles.
Karembeu was introduced to the press and fans last week by the club’s CEO Ioannis Vrentzos and vice president Savvas Theodoridis, alongside Pierre Issa who has been appointed to serve as the club’s sports director.
Vrentos said announcing the duo’s appointment is a great pleasure and he looks forward to working with them.
“Both are significant figures in European football, bearing their own history, who are expected to enhance Olympiacos and provide additional prestige to Greek football as a whole,” he said.
“With respect to Christian, no introduction is necessary. He has steadily been an ambassador for Olympicos abroad, both during his three-year presence as a player for our side, and the years following that.
“He has been a firm friend of the club and not long ago we decided to formalise this relationship by appointing him as strategic advisor to the administration over the entire scope of its operation – both in terms of scouting and organising our football team. It goes without saying that his fame and connections will further cement Olympiacos’ future in international football.”
For Karembeu re-establishing his ties to the club through this role will prove a great challenge.
“For me, it is a great joy to return to the Olympiacos extended family and Greece since I feel at home here. I want to seize the opportunity to congratulate the Olympiacos president for all the successes obtained until today,” Karembeu said.
“I want to warmly thank him for this opportunity. Things are sometimes simple, sometimes complicated and I am here to help Olympiacos by means of experience. We are all a team. Pierre and I will work together, as we will with everyone in the club. We will be together as a single person and, as I said many times, our heart and soul will be with Olympiacos. This is a major project ahead and we will all work for that. I am proud to be here.”
