The seven-week league kicked off in late August at the Savai’i Regional Technical Centre in Iva, Savai’i, following the site’s official inauguration on 24 August.
The purpose of the league is to provide local clubs with an introductory tournament which will help them to gain a better understanding of the laws of the game, the format of the competition and the rules and regulations of the Football Federation Samoa.
Eight clubs from a number of different villages have registered to take part in the league and the FFS competitions department is coordinating the running of it with assistance from Savai’i-based referees.
The eight registered teams, in both the men’s and women’s divisions are Lalomalava, Iva White Lions, Sapapalii, Saipipi, Vaitoomuli, Vailoa, Siufaga and Tafua.
A huge crowd turned out to show their support and witness the first action on the new FFS field for the league’s opening round.
In the women’s division Iva took on Tafua and while both sides put in the hard yards, the win was awarded to Iva after Tafua breached FFS regulations by fielding two players that were registered to another club. In the men’s division, the same two sides met up with Tafea taking the victory at the final whistle with a score of 4-0.
FFS Competitions Coordinator Tanya Bryce is incredibly pleased with the success of the league so far.
“We had a few small issues with unregistered players to begin with but overall the first round of the tournament was successful,” Bryce says. “It’s fantastic to see the support and enthusiasm of the people of Savai’i.
Weekday matches run from Wednesday to Friday with a 4pm kick-off.
