Papua New Guinea recorded an upset 2-0 victory over pre-tournament favourites Solomon Islands on the opening day and will now faceAmerican Samoa in their second match on Sunday.
A positive result would no doubt be a major boost towards their OFC U-20 campaign but Davani adds that American Samoa having tasted defeat at the hands of host side Fiji will be out to prove a point.
“With three points in the bag now, we will approach the next match against American Samoa very seriously,” he said.
“Of course we will be out to win that match as well but again we will not take them lightly and look to put a good show.
They may have lost their first match but all teams participating here are out to secure the FIFA U-20 World Cup spot so they all will be looking to regroup and come back strongly.”
Davani who is a former Papua New Guinea international, is now on familiar territory having played with local Fijian side Rewa in the past, and he believes American Samoa’s stubborn resistance in the second half of their loss to Fiji is something they are wary of.
“I thought they played well in their opening game with Fiji even though they lost. We approach every game as a hard game, no matter who we play and we are looking forward to the clash,” he added.
And while the former OFC Champions League winner tries to downplay Papua New Guinea’s first win in the competition since 2011, one player who stood out is eager to see his team’s form continue.
Papua New Guinea goalkeeper, Vagi Koniel, delivered a man of the match performance against the Solomon Islanders and wants to maintain his good form.
“We are playing for our country and need to be strong in every game. The next game with American Samoa will be a big challenge and I will try my best,” he said.
Three matches have been scheduled come match day two of the OFC Under-20 Championship on Sunday as Papua New Guinea takes on American Samoa at 4.30pm local time.
