The side is set to take part in the Youth Olympic Games, to be held in Singapore during August, and the final line-up will be announced later this month.
Coach Mick Robinson put his young charges through their paces during a training camp in Lae last week and was impressed by what he saw.
He believes there is enough talent at his disposal for the team to do well at the event.
The young Papua New Guinea women have been drawn in Group A for the Youth Olympics and will meet their counterparts from Turkey and Iran. The other female teams included are Chile, Trinidad and Tobago, and Equatorial Guinea.
Robinson’s side will not be the only OFC representatives in Singapore.
The U-15 men’s team from Vanuatu are also taking part and will face Bolivia and an as yet undecided representative from the CONCACAF region in Group C. The other teams involved in the male competition are hosts Singapore, Zimbabwe and Montenegro.
The top two finishers from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
The Oceania pair booked their tickets to Singapore after being selected by OFC under FIFA guidelines. FIFA stated that nominees must come from nations that ‘have never, or rarely, had the opportunity to participate in Olympic Games or World Cups’.
FIFA also requested that Oceania nominate different countries for the male and female tournaments.
Vanuatu were selected following the establishment of a youth academy as part of the FIFA Goal Football Programme while Papua New Guinea were chosen on the back of strong performances over the past couple of years.
These successes included a gold medal at the XIII South Pacific Games in Samoa in 2007, a competition that is part of the Olympic movement.
