AUCKLAND – Capital Football got off to a flyer in the National Women’s League match of the round but Auckland had enough to see off their challenge
and top the table with Waikato/BOP and Mainland who were first round winners on Sunday.

Zarnia Cogle gave Capital the perfect start inside two minutes at Keith Hay park to get a jump on the defending champions, but Auckland – missing
more than a handful of Football Ferns – still had enough international quality to grab three goals and all three points.

Goals from teenagers Ria Percival and Merissa Smith – both recently returned from the FIFA Women’s World Cup – gave Auckland a 2-1 first half lead,
before Sarah Gregorius made sure of the win with her 87th minute strike.

The match between last year’s grand finalists ebbed and flowed with Auckland edging Capital in the first half but facing another onslaught from
their rivals early in the second.
