After being selected to officiate at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Kumar was on track to make history as the first match official from Fiji to be involved at the tournament.
But disaster struck when a serious injury prior to the event prevented him from attending.
Thankfully the Nadroga-based school teacher has been given another chance, earning a call up to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
“I was unfortunate not take part in the World Cup in Brazil, but I’m happy that I have once again been given the opportunity to officiate at a major tournament,” he says.
“I have fought hard to be where I am today.
“This is my seventh FIFA tournament and I am very proud, as too are the Fiji Football Association and referees in Fiji.
“We have capable people in all aspects that can represent our country, but we need to be dedicated towards our goal.”
Kumar was selected as an assistant referee for the U-17 Group D clash between Belgium and Mali on 18 October, a game which was controlled by match officials who all come from OFC Member Associations.
The referee was New Zealander Nick Waldron, with fellow Kiwi Glen Lochrie joining Kumar as an assistant. Fourth official Abdelkader Zitouni hails from Tahiti.
