The result is the Kurukuru’s best at a major international tournament and will help to erase the pain of their agonising 5-6 opening game loss to the Cup hosts Libya.
The Solomon Islanders leapt out to a 2-0 lead which Guatemala were able to cancel out with two strikes of their own to draw level at halfime.
Guatemala continued their form revival by going ahead early in the second half, but this sparked the Kurukuru to lift their play again, establishing an imposing 6-3 lead.
But Guatemala also proved they weren’t prepared to surrender and began to utilize their goal keeper as a fifth attacker and the tactic paid off as they scored three straight goals. The final equalizing Guatemalan goal came with just 1:24 left on the clock.
Solomon Islands captain Elliot Ragomo scored four goals for his team and could have had more had he been able to capitalize on three 10 metre penalty opportunities.
