Germany were the big winners on Match Day 2 of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup – New Zealand 2008 after handing Costa Rica a football masterclass in Christchurch this afternoon. Goals to Dzsenifer Marozsan (2), Lynn Mester, Turid Knaak and Tabea Kemme were enough to see Germany home in a one sided fixture at QE II Stadium that leaves Ralf Peters’ team in total control of Group B.
Meanwhile in Group A, Denmark and Colombia played out a thrilling 1-1 draw at North Harbour Stadium that keeps both teams quarter-final hopes very much alive. Tatiana Ariza got Colombia off to the perfect start with a well taken goal on 20 minutes. But Denmark fought back doggedly and equalised directly from a corner on 51 minutes when Simon Boye’s set-peice slipped through the fingers of Paula Forero.
The result sets up a mouthwatering fixture on Saturday when host nation New Zealand square off against Denmark in what now shapes as a winner takes all affair.
In the final match of the day, Korea DPR take on Ghana at QE II Stadium, kick-off at 15h00 local time.
