Totori still had a year left of his two-year contract but after limited game time last season and no guarantee of regular game time in the upcoming season from new Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick a decision was made to terminate the striker’s contract.
The Phoenix have negotiated an agreement with Australian club Oakleigh Cannons to offer Totoria a contract for the remainder of the Victoria Premier League season.
“That will give Benji more exposure and we may also look at bringing him back to New Zealand through our feeder club Team Wellington for the 2013-14 ASB Championship season,” Phoenix general manager David Dome said.
“We thank Benji for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best for the future.”
Totori’s release opens up an import spot on the Wellington club’s roster giving them two spots to fill before the kick off of the new season. However the Solomon Islander is not the only international to be released by the club with All Whites defender Tony Lochhead one of five players who learned they would not be offered new contracts.
