The course was conducted by FTF technical director Eddy Etaeta while OFC technical coordinator Didier Chambaron also passed on some of his knowledge to the participants.
Representatives from nearly all of the national league teams were present and participation was not restricted to the head coaches – assistants and other members of each club’s coaching staff were also welcome to attend.
Those taking part numbered nearly 30 and each was involved in a range of interactive discussions and activities.
OFC representative Chambaron says the outcomes were positive and that similar courses are already being pencilled in by the FTF technical department.
“FTF have identified some needs and now they want to plan some courses, workshops and seminars to address them,” Chambaron says.
“They have already planned some courses for 2012 to look at such things as how to prepare teams and improve fitness levels.”
Chambaron says the participants relished the chance to come together and further develop their coaching skills.
“The course was interactive, we organised a lot of group work and the feedback was very interesting. It was also a good opportunity for the coaches to meet and discuss things, the spirit was very positive.”
The three-day gathering was held at the FTF academy in Papeete and coincided with the 2012 O-League match between Tefana and Fijian side Ba at the Stade Louis Ganivet.
The match was won 4-1 by Tefana and the participants made the most of the opportunity to observe and analyse some action from the Pacific’s top club competition.
“We watched the game and collected a lot of information,” Chambaron explains. “The day after, we analysed the information and the coach of Tefana told us what he wanted to do in terms of tactics and explained what the preparation had been like.”
The build-up to the game had been particularly challenging for Tefana coach Laurent Heinis as his side had lost by a record 10-0 scoreline against Waitakere United only weeks earlier.
“It was a very tough time for them and it was interesting to hear how the coach managed the weeks after the big loss to Waitakere,” Chambaron says.
