After two months of competition in which seven teams from Port Vila fought for the title, the Academy side finished the season at the top of the table with 12 points, followed closely by Amicale and Westam Girls.
VFF women’s development officer Rorona Kalsakau says the Academy side’s win is a reflection of the hard work being put into women’s football by the federation this year with the assistance of Australian volunteer Tom McDonald.
“Every one of the Academy team members is performing with a good level of football and they have been a good example to other girl’s teams in Port Vila,” Kalsakau says.
“Football is not just for boys and you can see more girls playing football in Vanuatu. I wish to thank everyone for their contribution this season and I am sure that next year there will be more girls coming to play football in Port Vila.”
While organised by VFF, the competition was sponsored by the Port Vila Football Association who are keen to show their commitment to women’s football in the region.
“PVFA has received a lot from fans and business houses this year and we don’t want to just receive, we have to give too,” PVFA administrator Bong Shem says.
“We are committed to the women’s football league and we want to step in and continue to sponsor the women’s U-17 competition.”
Next season PVFA will run all women’s football competitions in Port Vila, leaving VFF to branch out to developing women’s football in other regions of the country.
