The league has been in the pipeline for some time but followers had to wait until last week for it to be given the seal of approval by football’s highest power in the land, the SIFF Congress.
The competition was proposed to the congress amongst many other resolutions and its acceptance now enables SIFF to move forward with the plan to begin what is anticipated to become Solomon Islands’ premier football competition, bringing together eight clubs from its ten PFAs.
SIFF general secretary Eddie Ngava is delighted with the development and says the secretariat will actively pursue kicking off the league this month.
“The secretariat has been awaiting this decision from the congress and we can now get back to interested franchise owners, consortiums, business houses and the clubs who are interested and kick off the NSL,” he says.
Ngava also announced that an NSL workshop would be held as early as next week for any franchises or owners of clubs who are interested.
Expressions of interest forms are available to collect from the SIFF office at Ranadi for francise clubs looking to compete in the inagural competition.
The number of clubs set to take part has been raised to eight to be in line with the regulations for the O-League, the Pacific’s premier competition which brings together the top clubs from across the confederation.
Ngava is keen to point out that any clubs keen to take part must comply with the regulations.
“Anyone thinking of joining the NSL must step up to the standard,” he says. “Do not expect the NSL to step down. This is our first competition of this kind and it must be done right from the first go.”
