MAKURU SET TO CLINCH MINOR PREMIERSHIP

HONIARA – Makuru FC looks set to clinch DJ League’s minor premiership title this afternoon when they take on minnows Sunbeam at Lawson Tama Stadium.

They currently sit one point behind league leaders Uncles FC who have played all their matches.

A win for Makuru this afternoon will confirm their place at the top of the league and will be expected from their fans against a Sunbeam side who sit at the other end of the table.

A loss will see Uncles claim the title but recent form and unprecedented depth in the Makuru squad would suggest this is unlikely.

Makuru and Uncles are the only two sides in the league who have not lost a game all year, although Makuru have been known to drop their guard against lesser opponents.

For Sunbeam, a win this afternoon and in their final match against Rangers Tuesday next week will see them qualify for the DJ League’s top 8 competition. However this seems a big ask from the squad who have only won two games all year.

In other DJ league action Rangers beat Laugu 2-0 to solidify their position in the top eight with one game in hand.

National striker Godwin Bebeu unlocked the Laugu defence in the second half to score an opportunist goal to edge his side toward a very important three points.

Rangers met stiff resistance from Laugu – who are second to bottom in the DJ League – who refused to surrender the match without a fight.

Bebeu beat Laugu’s offside trap running onto a through ball and managed to control it well before placing it past an advancing Laugu goalkeeper on his goal line.

The goal was met with wild scenes of celebration on the Rangers bench. Substitute Peter Maute added Rangers second goal to secure their place.

Team coach former national player Matai Vave was elated with his sides performance.

“I am happy because todays result us to sixth position on the premier league table tally.”
