Danny Hay’s squad were drawn against France, Syria and Paraguay in Group F during the event, which was held in the presence of Elias Fiueroa, Marcelo Salas and Ivan Zamorano, three of Chile’s greatest-ever football stars.
Also present was FIFA Executive Committee member and chairperson of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Organising Committee Sunil Gulati who delivered a short message inviting participating teams to see “the tournament in Chile as part of a bigger picture, due to the fact that it will be a key contribution to growth of our game globally”.
All three of New Zealand’s group games will take place at the Estadio Chinquihue in Puerto Montt, with the Kiwis opening their campaign against UEFA U-17 Champions France on Monday 19 October at 5pm.
Three days later they will face Asian Football Confederation side Syria, who beat Uzbekistan 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the AFC U-16 Championship to secure their spot in Chile.
Their final group encounter will be on Sunday 25 October against Paraguay, who finished fourth at the 2015 Campeonato Sudamericano Sub-17.
