A beginners referee course took place earlier this week while a two-day elite course kicked off today at Port Vila Stadium.
PVFA referee committee vice-president Lencie Fred, a former FIFA assistant referee, says with the 2013 competition due to get started very soon, it is important that all match officials are ready for action.
“The competition this year will be tougher than last year and the National Super League will determine the winner who will represent Vanuatu in next year’s OFC Champions League so we must be ready now,” Fred says.
He says the association is very keen to start developing young referees, which is why they have introduced the beginners course.
“Every young referee wants to be successful but not all of them will achieve the level of success at refereeing that they seek,” he says.
“Some get to be very good at it, some get to be excellent at it. Others are never really able to achieve the level of excellence that they have set for themselves, and therefore do not achieve their full potential in refereeing.
“That is why learning the laws of the game are a must, and why we encouraged as many referees as possible to attend the course.”
