After the Coupe de Tahiti Nui, in which Pirae triumphed 3-1 last Tuesday, the two top Tahitian teams met for the second time in a week in the title decider.
To successfully retain the national crown Pirae needed a win and they looked on the right track when Raimana Li Fung Kuee put his team two up within the first 13 minutes of play.
With this brace the 2013 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bronze Ball winner became the best ever goal scorer in the history of the Tahitian championship with 51 goals to his name in this season alone.
However Tefana weren’t going to give their rivals such an easy pass and as Jonathan Tehau scored first in the 15th minute before drawing the 2012 OFC Champions League runners-up in line just ahead of the break.
It wasn’t quite a fairytale however as Tefana was reduced to ten men following double goalscorer Tehau’s sending off in the 83rd minute.
Tefana resisted the pressure from Pirae players and the score remained locked at 2-2 when the final whistle blew.
The draw handed Tefana their fourth national title and in turn tickets to their fourth OFC Champions League.
With the domestic formalities behind them the newly crowned Tahiti league champions can focus completely on their upcoming OFC Champions League campaign.
‘’Our priority remains qualification for the semi-finals,” Tefana technical director Laurent Heinis says.
‘’Every game will be difficult as we share Group C with quality opponents and Tefana will have to be at their best to succeed.
Tefana will open their 2015 OFC Champions League campaign against New Zealand’s Team Wellington on 12 April at the ANZ Stadium of Suva in Fiji.
