Wood, on loan from Premiership club West Bromwich Albion, came on as a 59th-minute substitute but couldn’t help Birmingham avoid a 2-1 defeat to Derby at Pride Park.
The duration of Wood’s loan takes in Birmingham’s league games against Coventry, Middlesbrough and Watford, plus their two-legged Europa League qualifying tie against Portuguese side Nacional.
West Brom’s sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth said the club had initially hoped to keep the 19-year-old at the Hawthorns for the start of the Premiership season but the Birmingham move made sense.
“He’s done really well in pre-season but the opportunity to play both league and potentially European matches with Birmingham, who are right on our doorstep, during a 28-day loan period was perfect for all parties,” he said.
Elsewhere, Winston Reid played the full 90 minutes for Sam Allardyce’s West Ham United, who suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Cardiff at their Upton Park home.
To complete the hat-trick of appearances by All Whites, fellow young defender Tommy Smith came on as a second-half substitute to play the final 26 minutes in Ipswich’s 3-0 away win over Bristol City.
