The side finished the season with 24 points from eight matches and have also set a record as the first women’s team to go through the season without conceeding a goal.
The Uncles stars have also dominated the league’s awards with Betty Sade and Veronica Sade picking up the best goalkeeper and coach of the season awards respectively.
The prestigious Golden Boot award went to Laydah Samani, who smacked in eight goals during the unbeaten campaign.
Second place in the league went to Koloale, who finished three points behind Uncles and whose only defeat was against the champions.
Junior Flamingo mounted a late comeback to win third spot over Marist. Both teams had 13 points each but Junior Flamingo lead the way with a slightly superior goal difference.
But the season undoubtedly belonged to Uncles as they claimed their third league title in as many years. They have become the only Honiara club to have achieved this feat since women’s football was introduced in the Solomons in 1999.
Player/coach Veronica Sade says her team’s success is down to the hard work and dedication of the players.
“I want all teams in the women’s league to work hard so that we can lift up the standard of football we are playing,” she says.
“There needs to be support for women’s football in the future as it would be sad if our players lost interest. If there is more support for women’s football there will be more clubs participating in the league and it will be more competitive.”
SIFF General Secretary Eddie Ngava says the 2009/10 league has achieved a lot in terms of developing women’s football.
“More girls have come to play football in recent years and SIFF has ensured there is development in the standard by not only organising the league but also by enriching it with the monthly High 5 championships,” Ngava said. “This has helped women footballers to develop better techniques and skills.”
Ngava has assured women footballers in Honiara that SIFF will pursue Our Telekom to become the sponsor of the 2010/11 women’s football league.
The date for the kick off is yet to be announced but it is expected to be after the national women’s team returns from the OFC Women’s Nations Cup.
