The new league format has been decided on based on Tahiti’s objectives for the OFC Champions League, OFC Nations Cup and with the advice of FFF Technical Director François Blaquart.
FTF Competitions Director Charles Ariiotima says Blaquart provided a lot of sound advice aimed at helping the federation lift the level of competition.
“From this season and for the next four years the Ligue 1 will be played in four phases with eight teams, the same number of teams as in the past, will play in three of those phases,” Ariiotima explains.
“At the end of this phase, and this is the point where we really note what is new about the league, the first-placed team will play the fourth, the second the third-placed and the winner of each match will go through to the final to determine the winner of the Ligue 1.”
The eight teams taking part in the 2015-16 Ligue 1 include 2015 OFC Champions League participants AS Tefana and AS Pirae along with AS Venus, AS Central Sport, AS Manu Ura, AS Roniu, AS Dragon and AS Aorai.
Phase Three of the league is due to conclude on the 13 March 2016, at which point the top four sides will play-off for the champions title and a place in the 2016 OFC Champions League.
