AUCKLAND – Korea Republic, England and USA have completed the quarter-final line-up as a rousing group stage reached a fitting conclusion today in Christchurch and Auckland.
The trio sealed their progression in very different manners, however, on a day in which Nigeria, Brazil and France all succumbed to elimination.
The Americans sneaked through on goal difference after sharing two wonder goals with France who had needed victory to advance, while Korea Republic beat the English 3-0 to edge their opponents to top spot in Group D.
England managed to cling on to the runners-up spot in their group, but only by the skin of their teeth: had Nigeria added a fifth goal to their 2-2 draw with Brazil, they would have marched on at their rivals’ expense.
Japan may have been safely through to the knockout phase already, but they underlined their title credentials in a bolder font with an emphatic defeat of Paraguay. The result ensured Hiroshi Yoshida’s side advanced with the competition’s only 100 per cent record, and took them on to 17 goals – almost double what the first stage’s next most-prolific team recorded.
At North Harbour Stadium, American Vicki DiMartino, scored a contender for goal of the tournament 11 minutes into the second half against France. Picking up the ball just as an attack seemed to have broken down, the striker – out of nothing and with very little back-lift – sent a quite magnificent left-foot shot soaring over Laetitia Philippe and into the far corner via the underside of the crossbar.
France remained a threat throughout and, with 18 minutes remaining, the outstanding Rubio set up a grandstand finish with an equally stunning left-foot shot that again clipped the underside of the bar on its way into the net from fully 30 yards.
It was not enough, however, with some late heroics from Vancil ensuring that USA march on to the last eight and France head for home.
Meanwhile in Christchurch Japan maintained their perfect record and top spot in the Group with a comfortable 7-2 win – making them the only team to progress to the quarterfinals with a perfect record.
That record looked under threat in the early stages, however, especially when Jacqueline Gonzalez fired the already-eliminated Paraguayans in front from the penalty spot on 20 minutes, an incident which also led to Minori Chiba’s dismissal.
The Asians have proved irresistible going forward, though, and even without star forwards Mana Iwabuchi and Chinatsu Kira, they were still able to strike three times in the space of seven minutes to head into the half-time break with a 3-1 lead.
Captain Natsui Kisikawa led by example, hauling the Japanese level, and Marika Ohshima and Haruka Hamada then added further goals before the Paraguayans knew what had hit them.
Hamada completed her double six minutes into the second half and although Gloria Villamayor reduced the deficit three minutes later, Kishikawa made sure of victory 17 minutes from time before Saori Takahashi added a late brace to round off the scoring.
In Group D Korea Republic were dominant from the start, and after two near misses, they scored the first goal against England at New Zealand 2008, Ji So Yun wriggling into space at the edge of the box and angling a right-foot shot just inside the far post after eight minutes play.
It was a thoroughly deserved goal and, within eight minutes, the Korean lead had been doubled, with Koh Kyung Yeon sneaking in ahead of her marker to head powerfully home from a tantalising Lee Hyung Young corner.
This took the Kim Yong-Ho’s side top on goals scored and, with England offering nothing in attack, the South Koreans made sure of securing pole position with 19 minutes remaining when Song Ari out-jumped Danielle Carter to head home Shin Mi Na’s deep, flighted free-kick.
In Christchurch Brazil opened the scoring on 35 minutes when Ketlen who had impressed throughout, let fly from 20 metres to beat Nigerian keeper Marbel Egwuenu. Juliana Cardozo almost repeated the dose two minutes later, with a shot that hit the bar.
Nigeria equalised just before the break when Orji put in Okoronkwo’s cross, despite an initial save from Aline. After the break, Nigeria continued to dominate, but a foul by Orji on Brazil’s Thais saw the former sent off after 61 minutes, and Brazil scored eight minutes later: Rafaelle’s superb free kick from the right sailed in.
Even with ten players, Nigeria continued to go on the attack, and were rewarded with an equalizer when Okoronkwo scored on 75 minutes. Nigeria continued to press for the winner, but it was not to be, and both sides now head for home.
The second stage begins in Wellington on Saturday afternoon with Denmark meeting Korea DPR followed by a clash between Germany and Canada.
