Brian Shelley and Paul Temple have been appointed as joint head coaches of the 2013 OFC Champions League finalists and Premiership title holders, taking over from Paul Marshall who parted ways with the club earlier last month.
The new duo will work closely with the football department with Shelley taking on a player/coach role, continuing to play for the team as he did last season, while Temple earns promotion from assistant coach.
Temple holds a New Zealand Football Senior Level 3 Coaching Licence and has just completed the first part of the UEFA A Licence. He played with University Mt Wellington, winners of the Chatham Cup in 2001 and 2003, from 2000-2003 and has extensive coaching experience as part of the NZF national coaching staff at four FIFA World Cup events, including two as head coach of the U-17 women’s team.
Shelley has played professionally in Ireland and England and has represented clubs at the highest level in both the UEFA Cup and Champions League. He was capped at youth level for the Republic of Ireland and has won every major honour while playing in the Irish league.
Coaching-wise, Shelley began building experience as a senior coach in Europe before moving Down Under where he held several roles at state level in Victoria, Australia. Shelley currently holds his UEFA B Licence and recently completed part one of the UEFA A Licence in the UK.
The pair are both enthusiatic about working together closely in their new roles.
“We know each other well from last season with the club, we have a shared philosophy in terms of how we want to play and how we go about our business. We will compliment each other well,” Temple says.
Waitakere United CEO Bill MacGowan is excited at the new appointments and looks forward to seeing the pair start preparing for the 2013/14 Premiership season.
“There have been a number of changes at the club over the off-season so we are delighted Brian and Paul will be coaching the team this season,” he says.
“They are very experienced for young coaches, have great enthusiasm for the challenge ahead and we are confident they will take the team forward.”
