The tournament got underway last weekend at Subrail Park in Labasa where the ‘Men in Black’ defeated Suva and Nadroga to earn top standing in Group A.
With three points of their own Suva look likely to qualify second in the group, but will have to await the outcome of their match against Nadroga to confirm. However a win to either Nadroga or Nadi would allow them to leap ahead of Suva to steal the group’s coveted second spot.
Meanwhile Group B remains relatively open despite Labasa having earned six points in the opening two rounds to secure the lead spot. With both Lautoka and Rewa sitting on three points, wins in their matches against Labasa and Navua respectively will see these sides secure passage to the semi-finals.
The action picks up tomorrow in Govind Park with the semi-finals set to get underway on Saturday.
Fiji FA CEO Bob Kumar says everything is on track for an exciting and successful conclusion to this year’s tournament.
“We hope that the patrons will be out in their numbers and will enjoy the remainder of the event,” Kumar says.
While last year’s event acted as the qualifier for the Pacific Cup, with the four semi-finalists going on to take part in the event hosted in New Zealand, Fiji FA president Rajesh Kumar says this will not be the case in 2013.
“We have decided that we will assess the semi-finalists from the Battle of the Giants and the IDC, which will be held later this year, to select the four teams that will represent Fiji at the Pacific Cup,” Patel says.
“Last year we selected the sides early and a few teams were not able to be consistent in their performance by the time they took part in the Pacific Cup so we have decided to change our approach this year.”
