PORT MORESBY – A German consulting company has stepped in to support Papua New Guinea University side -Inter FC (UIFC)- in the upcoming Telikom National Soccer League.
Deutsche Montan Technologies (DMT) yesterday donated soccer equipment valued at more than K3000 to Inter FC at their training ground on the UPNG oval.
German GEOMAP project manager Dr Friedrick-Karl Bandelow said his love of soccer inspired him to help out the university side.
“I love soccer and in Germany we all love soccer – that’s our national sport," he said.
“With the consulting company I am with, it is only appropriate that we help clubs like University."
He said UIFC did not approach him about equipment sponsorship but he took it on himself to see what support DMT could provide.
Dr Bandelow donated balls, cones, medical kit, balls, bibs and training ladders.
“I asked myself how we as a company could support UIFC for a good cause.
“And since the name University is paramount to PNG because this is where all the future leaders of this country come from, DMT believes that we have a part to play in providing what is neccessary for the players,” Dr Bandelow said.
DMT is one of the leading engineering companies in the world. They have signed a contract with the PNG Government but are working closely with the Department of National Planning where Mineral Resource Authority are the direct benefactors.
“We provide consultancy and are funded by the European Union.
“We explore, and mine and do engineering,” he said. “We are not a commercial company.”
UIFC president Kepas Wali thanked DMT and its parent company GEOMAP for their contribution.
“It will certainly help us as we prepare for NSL,” Wali said.
Wali is the Mineral Resource Authority managing director and it was there that Dr Bandelow met him through consultancy and came up with the idea of sponsorship.
