Tasked with the responsibility of bringing all of Samoa’s current and aspiring referees up to speed with the Laws of the Game, Faaiuaso is relishing the chance to upgrade his own skills on this occasion.
“This is the first time I have taken part in a FIFA FUTURO III course,” he says.
“I expect to learn and find more tools and resources on what is required to better develop referees and improve in all areas of the game through theory and practical sessions.
“I also hope to learn from each participant’s experiences and also learn from the instructors’ expertise.”
The FIFA Instructors include former English Premier League referee Steve Bennett, Toshio Utsumi of Japan and FIFA Fitness Instructor Mark Hester from New Zealand, all of whom share a wealth of knowledge and experiences which will aid each of the course participants.
As well as being a point of information dissemination for the rest of the referee community in Samoa,
Faaiuaso is hoping his involvement will also have a more personal benefit.
“I have been a referee for five years, since 2009, and my main aim is to be appointed to a FIFA tournament,” he says.
“But overall it will be a huge benefit because we will take back what we have learnt from the course and share and implement it with our current referees – and hopefully recruit more referees to assist us in the future.”
He adds that for him, taking part in a course such as this one is incredibly important to Samoa’s referee development.
“I will become technical instructor for our Member Association and will be able to continue facilitating workshops to improve, develop and prepare referees for the next level so they can have the ability to make split-second decisions which may decide the outcome of the game – and this is very important.”
The FIFA Regional Referee Instructor course (FUTURO III) concludes today after a week of practical and theory sessions aimed at improving the knowledge and practice of referee instructors from around the Oceania region.
