The 19-year-old scored from a free kick early in the second half but it was a case of too little, too late as Southampton had already put themselves three goals up at the break.
Birmingham appeared to be suffering the effects of a loss in Europe just four days earlier, where Wood played 30 minutes off the bench in the mid-week home defeat to SC Braga of Portugal.
Also in English Championship action, Winston Reid was rested from the starting line-up for the London derby match with Millwall but made an appearance after 30 minutes to replace the injured James Tomkins. The match ended in a goalless draw.
North of the border, Rory Fallon debuted for Aberdeen in a 2-2 draw with Kilmarnock. Despite not getting his name on the scoresheet, Fallon was in the action, receiving a yellow card for simulation after an incident in the 18-yard box. Dons manager Craig Brown was adamant his side should have had a penalty following the challenge.
In the English Premier League, Ryan Nelsen was forced to watch Blackburn Rovers’ shock 4-3 win over Arsenal from the stands.
In MLS action, Simon Elliot was replaced at halftime in Chivas USA’s 3-2 loss to Chicago Fire, while Andy Boyens was again an unused substitute.
Dan Keat replaced David Beckham to grab 12 minutes of action in the LA Galaxy’s 3-0 win over Michael Boxall’s Vancouver Whitecaps. The young Kiwi defender did not see any game time for the second week running.
Still in the USA, Andy Bevin continued his run of form for West Virginia University, scoring twice in a 4-1 win over non-conference team Richmond. The U-20 international now has five goals in six games for the Mountaineers.
And finally, further afield Kayne Vincent was in the news for his new side Prayag United in the Indian I-League. His free-kick created the only goal in a 1-0 win over Chirag United Kerala.
