The Papua New Guinea Football Association invited local coaches Clarence Hukahu (East Sepik Futsal), Gordon Tourevu (Nuigo Futsal Association) and Derek Maira (East Sepik Futsal) along to further develop their skills.
Morning sessions covered theory of the game, while the practical segments took place in the afternoon.
The theory work covered futsal laws of the game, characteristics and methodology of a futsal coach, tactics, physical preparation and futsal development plans.
The afternoon practical component included sessions on futsal technique, tactics, goalkeeping and possession consolidation.
The trio said they had learned so much from Schmeling during the week and were now looking forward to adding to the already flourishing futsal programme in the province.
Hukahu said the game was introduced in Wewak back in 1996, when they trialled futsal at primary school level.
“The aim was to at least introduce a sport that needed the students to think quickly with a small number of teammates,” he said.
“School aged students were being easily distracted by social issues and discipline, and futsal has played a big part in fighting our cause.”
The concept proved to be a success over the years and led to the improvement of their provincial teams at the PNG Games level, with their U-15 team winning a fair play award at the tournament in Madang this year.
