The 20-year-old joins the Robins from Premier League outfit West Bromwich Albion after recently completing a successful loan spell at Birmingham City.
Wood’s ten goals from 28 appearances in all competitions for the Blues made him the club’s top scorer and included his first professional hat trick and a dramatic late winner against Club Brugge in a Europa League tie.
From the dizzying heights of European football Wood now finds himself in a relegation dogfight at Bristol City, who sit just three points ahead of the drop zone at the season’s mid-point.
But former Waikato FC and Hamilton Wanderers striker Wood, who has been capped 17 times for New Zealand and is eligible for the Olympic squad, is excited about the prospect.
“Now looking forward to a new test and a new challenge,” he said on his Twitter account.
“Glad to be at Bristol City and hope it’s going to be good for us both.”
Despite his proficient strike rate, a large portion of Wood’s appearances at Birmingham came from the substitutes’ bench – something that may change when he arrives at Ashton Gate.
“Chris is someone I’ve been aware of for a while and I tried to sign him at St Johnstone,” Bristol City manager Derek McInnes told the club’s website.
“In the end he went to Barnsley and Brighton due to restrictions on cross-border loans. I’m delighted we’ve been able to add him to our squad.”
“He’s a big lad with good feet and he’s already shown himself to be a proven goalscorer in the Championship,” McInnes said.
“I’m sure he will prove a valuable addition to the squad. I’ve seen him play a number of times – he’s young and hungry and I’m sure he will enjoy his time with us.”
Wood’s first game for his new club could be away to Brighton on Sunday morning (NZT), for whom he scored nine goals in 31 games on loan last season.
