In an influential display on Friday night, McGlinchey was involved in the build-up play for Central Coast’s 29th-minute opener, provided the cross that resulted in their second three minutes later and delivered a pin-point free kick in to the box for the Mariner’s final goal in the 66th minute as his side closed to within three points of leaders Brisbane.
Jeremy Brockie also played the role of provider with a tantalising back-post cross laying on Newcastle Jets’ second goal in a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Melbourne Victory. Marco Rojas got another start for Melbourne but gave away the penalty that allowed Newcastle to draw level.
Shane Smeltz netted his fifth goal of the season – a 54th-minute penalty past international teammate Glen Moss – helping Perth Glory to a 2-0 win over Smeltz’s former club Gold Coast United.
Tim Brown, Tony Lochhead, Ben Sigmund and Leo Bertos all played full games for Wellington Phoenix but couldn’t quite get their side over the line as the club sank to a 1-0 away defeat to Melbourne Heart.
In the only W-League match featuring a Football Fern this weekend, Emma Kete’s Perth Glory suffered an 11-0 thrashing at the hands of a rampant Sydney FC.
Meanwhile, Auckland City’s All White contingent of Ivan Vicelich and David Mulligan continued their build-up towards Thursday night’s FIFA Club World Cup showdown against J.League champions Kashiwa Reysol with a 2-1 win over Ryutsu Keizai University. Mulligan helped set up a goal for former Junior All White Adam McGeorge who in turn had set up Auckland’s first goal.
Dan Keat and the LA Galaxy are currently touring Asia and the former New Zealand age-group player enjoyed a brief spell off the bench in a 1-0 win over an Indonesian selection comprised of national and U-23 players.
Europe
The German Frauen Bundesliga took a break for the quarter-finals of the German Cup over the weekend, with three Football Ferns involved.
Ria Percival played 90 minutes as FFC Frankfurt beat league leader Turbine Postdam 5-1 while Katie Hoyle and Sarah Gregorius put in 120-minute shifts for Bad Neuenahr as their goalless encounter against Bayern Munich went to penalties. Hoyle converted her spot kick but a team mate missed Neuenahr’s sixth attempt to send Bayern through to the semi finals.
Ryan Nelsen and Winston Reid are still on the injured list for Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United respectively but Chris Wood saw 15 minutes from the bench for Birmingham City in a 1-0 loss away to Cardiff in the English Championship.
Elsewhere in Wales, former All White Greg Draper scored twice in a 6-0 win over Bryntirion Athletic in the fourth round of the Welsh Cup. Draper has also scored 10 goals in the Welsh Premier League this season to keep second-placed TNS in the hunt for a UEFA Champions League place.
In Scotland, Rory Fallon’s Aberdeen are still bottom of the table after a 2-0 away defeat to Kilmarnock, while in Malta Kris Bright’s Balzan Youths lost 1-0 away to bottom-placed Mosta to remain mid-table.
