PAGO PAGO: Leone High School were crowned the top schoolgirls team in American Samoa after beating rivals Samoana in the final last week.
Leone striker Lelamae scored the game’s only goal capitalising on a goalkeeping blunder to put her side in front just before half-time. The second half did not yield any goals as Leone hung on for their win.
The narrow 1-0 victory brought to an end the girls high school league with the boys title yet to be decided. This year’s schools competitions are proving even more popular than previous years demonstrating the growth of football in the US territory.
The school season is the opening fixture in the American Samoa Football Association season and will be followed by the popular Summer League and the women’s and men’s national club league after mid-year.
