The package offers all 64 matches from Brazil 2014 live and daily highlights of 45 minutes, as well as all FIFA tournaments between 2012 and 2014, including the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, 2013 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Tahiti and 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Thailand.
SBS Australia is able to offer the action as the licensee for FIFA media rights in Australia and Oceania during the 2011-2014 cycle.
“It is fantastic that people in the region will again get the chance to watch the world’s biggest footballing event,” OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas says.
“This can only be good for the game because young people will be able to see their heroes in action and have something to aspire to. We are committed to seeing an increase in football exposure across the Pacific so we can promote the sport and deliver OFC’s social responsibility messages to a wider audience.”
The deal will continue a period of vastly-increased coverage of the FIFA World Cup within the Pacific. Every match from the 2010 tournament was beamed live and free-to-air into homes in 11 Oceania countries and, for fans in many of these nations, South Africa 2010 was their first taste of live World Cup action.
Most did not have free-to-air access to live matches during the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea Republic and Japan while many also missed out on the live drama from Germany four years later.
SBS Head of Sport Ken Shipp is pleased with the arrangement for 2014 and believes MP & Silva is ideal for the role.
“MP & Silva is well placed to distribute the TV rights for the 2014 FIFA World Cup as the leader in football distribution in Asia,” he says. “We are excited with the prospect of reaching out to more football fans in the Oceania region.”
MP & Silva has a strong media rights portfolio in Asia-Pacific, Oceania and the Middle East that includes partnerships with OFC, Asian Football Confederation, Olympic Council of Asia, Japanese Football League and many others. The company also distributes top European football action in Asia, including the English Premier League, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1.
“MP & Silva has done a great job in leading the distribution of football content in the Asia-Pacific region,” MP & Silva CEO Andrea Radrizzani says. “Being appointed by SBS is a worthy recognition of our leadership in the market and we are very excited to use our network of broadcasters to improve audiences of international football in Oceania.”
MP & Silva will be the exclusive distributor of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ television rights across cable, satellite and terrestrial for the territories of American Samoa, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
