Chung, who is also the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) President, is keen to get to work on domestic matters as he undertakes a rigorous programme of activity during his forthcoming visit.
“We are focused strongly on technical development programmes and infrastructure development throughout the country but part of my mission is to meet with Hon. Sasindra Mathuvel about the proposed development project in Kimbe.
“The first phase is already complete as part of the FIFA Goal II project and we anticipate a site for football that is one day complete with pitches and gym facilities,” Chung says.
The FIFA Goal II project comprises two playing pitches, basic shower and changing facilities, a small administration office on a fully fenced and secure site next to the water front.
“We anticipate the next phase will provide full amenities for Kimbe and the West New Guinea islands area and for the region to utilise as fully as a regional Technical Centre.
“This includes administration offices and conference centre with full service amenities,” he says.
Another item on the OFC President’s agenda will be the South Pacific Games which is to be hosted by Papua New Guinea in July-August 2015.
But Chung moved early to quash speculation that the Men’s football tournament would form the first part of qualification for the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018.
“As President of the PNGFA I am already appointed to this project but I can confirm that the football competition will not be part of the Oceania qualifying pathway to Russia,” he says.
Another project close to Chung’s heart is developing football in Bougainville.
Located some 3.5 hours away from Port Moresby by plane, Chung says the popularity of football means the island features as vital in his vision for Papua New Guinea.
“Bougainville is closer to the Solomon Islands than Port Moresby and it is a war-torn area but their love for football is obvious.
“There is a project proposal being prepared for FIFA consideration in early 2014 but it is expected that a joint-venture will be agreed with the Autonomous Government of Bougainville,” Chung says.
“I believe football can achieve a lot in Bougainville and we can help develop their administration and their technical training centres further,” he says.
Chung will also oversee the preparations for a return visit to Papua New Guinea with a FIFA delegation scheduled for mid-November.
The OFC President returns to Auckland, New Zealand, on Sunday 20 October.
