Seventy young girls aged 8-13 years old were treated to six different football-based activities giving them all the opportunity to fall in love with the beautiful game.
Giving added benefit to the activities on offer was having a round of the Te Vahine championship played on the field next door, giving the young participants the chance to see where football can lead them.
Women’s football development officer Ethelle Taputu says the event was also an opportunity to promote the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
“It’s an important day on the calendar for all women,” Taputu says.
“One in every three women in the world is the victim of either physical or sexual violence. In 2012, one in two women in the world died at the hands of their partner or a member of their family compared with one in every 20 men.”
While the focus of the festival is to promote football activities and the opportunities on offer for women in the sport, Taputu says aligning those activities with a social message is an effective way of raising awareness.
The event was attended by girls from six regions; Mahina, Pirae, Papeete, Faaa, Punaauia and Moorea.
