Coach Tom McDonald’s squad is compiled largely of players from the VFF Academy who missed out on the OFC U-17 qualifier after the event was cancelled, but will get a second chance to show off their skills.
“The girls are excited to play for Vanuatu in an OFC competition after we missed out on the OFC U-17 last year,” McDonald says.
“We are working hard to prepare the team at the moment and our main objective is to play in the competition and get experience from encounters against the teams from New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. We want to return to Vanuatu to continue to develop women’s football.”
McDonald says his hope is that the tournament will spark an even greater passion for football within the girls, and they will be encouraged to remain on their footballing path.
“I would like to thank VFF and OFC especially for inviting us to be part of the competition. Our girls are really excited to be playing in this competition.”
The Academy U-17 girls have been competing in the Port Vila Women’s League and currently sit third on the table after overcoming Tafea 1-0 last week.
