In the ASHSAA Boy’s Soccer League season opener the Tafuna Warriors Varsity squad came out victorious in their match up with the Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats, recording a 4-1 victory.
Both the Tafuna Junior Varsity and Varsity squads won their matches, with the J-V side winning via a forfeit from their opposition, who didn’t have enough players with the correct equipment to field a team.
Tafuna’s Varsity squad went three goals up in the first period but struggled to keep pace after the break.
Ryan Pa’aga, Keniseli Tupuola and Sinisa Tua scored the Warriors’ three goals in the first half while Kid Bartley completed the team’s final tally of the match.
Alai Semeatu scored in the second half for the Wildcats.
There are five schools competing in the J-V and Varsity divisions — Fa’asao-Marist Crusaders, Warriors, Samoana Sharks, Faga’itua Vikings and the Wildcats.
The Vikings are the defending champions in the Varsity division while Samoana is last year’s title holder for the J-V bracket.
Samoana starts the defense of their title from last year against the Crusaders on 5 April while the Vikings take on the Sharks on 6 April.
There will be no playoffs for either division this school year with the champions set to be determined by who has the most points at the end of the competition.
Teams earn three points for a win, one for a tie and zero for a loss. There are two rounds of games scheduled for the boy’s high school soccer league.
The first tiebreaker, used in the case of two teams with equal points, is the differential in goals for and against while the second one is goals scored.
